National Day of Action Rally for Marriage Equality
So I went to the Marriage Equality rally in Melbourne and it was awesome. The one I went to last year was excellent too. However, this one had some extra punch. Like last year, Greens MP Adam Bandt spoke, but there were a few new speakers: Charlie Pickering, Magda Szubanski and Karl Katter to name a few. All of them had brilliant speeches and the crowd was roaring! Then we marched to the Old...

Marriage Equality in Australia
In 2004 the Howard government passed a bill to amend to the Marriage Act in order to include the common law definition of marriage, i.e., that it is only between a man and a woman. The following was specified in the amendment:
Marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life. Certain unions are not marriages A union solemnised in a...

Have you ever had this kind of conversation with a fool?
Pleb: Corporations are so greedy.
You: So you’d prefer some of their wealth be shared amongst others?
Pleb: Yeah, those companies don’t need all that money.
You: So you’re a socialist then?
Followed by spluttering and denial etc.
I don’t quite understand the anti-culture toward socialism/communism, (probably something...

mmm cool yes thanks Obama that word was totally necessary
note the same-breath conflation of “committed” and “monogamous”
note the clearly stated point that “committed monogamous” relationships are what we’re talking about
I am happy...

How to stay away from tumblr leading up to exams
Step 1: Open Notepad, Word or whatever word processor you prefer, and type gibberish. (eg: erjfh873jhfdahdfnk)
Step 2: Log on to tumblr (who are we kidding, you’re already logged on) and go to ‘preferences’.
Step 3: Paste gibberish password and save.
Step 4: Print gibberish password, hide it away, or if you know you will search it out give it someone you trust for safekeeping...

It’s such a joke to think that our early years, called formative years, are there to fill in some gap before our real lives begin. Educational institutions don’t hold some magic key to your future, only to be handed to you upon graduation. No, life begins when you’re out making decisions for yourself, it’s there in those friendships you made and continue to make, in every...

This budget is good for teeth, bad for brains.
– Adam Bandt (via liberalsocialistorwhatever)
Where did you get this from? On the Greens website it says Milne said it. But maybe Bandt was just repeating this fantastic line? ;)

Here are some François Hollande’s policies:
Foreign policy: supports the withdrawal of French troops present in Afghanistan by the end of 2012.
European politics: aims to conclude a new contract of Franco-German partnership and he advocates the adoption of a Directive on the protection of…

thecohort replied to your post: A day from university
You haven’t given Hollande much time to get radical! But I doubt we’ll see anything from him but the standard keynsian rubbish. Have you read The Outsider? I thought it was pretty great myself. Are you at melbourne uni btw? It sounds familiar :p
Yeah, I know but a political analyst on the news said he doubts there will be any radical changes....

A day from university
Not okay. I started today with a 9am maths test which I failed miserably. I couldn’t bear to sit through the second part of the maths class so I left. I hung out in the queer lounge for about an hour. The topic of discussion seemed to be Hollande winning the French election. A couple of people were staunchly opposed to his presidency on the grounds that he’s a socialist (technically a...

Is there any happier feeling than checking an answer to a maths problem you’ve just done and getting it right?
